For people who are interested in similar directions for Data Visualization, there is a lot going on today in Immersive Analytics [1]. As framed by Dr Tim Dwye, the prevailing consensus up to the last 10 years or so was that any use of 3+ dimensions when implemented is always so bad it only gets in the way of your message and should be avoided at all costs at all times. This is being replaced thanks to new publishing mediums that are better suited to 3D/HCI/etc and let designers express information in new ways kind of like in this example. I sincerely expect we will use IA type thinking to open up new imaginative spaces in a lot of well established existing systems which evolved arround the limitations of 2D flat screen low level conditions.
[1] https://www.monash.edu/it/hcc/ialab
