I know that they never were excellent, but I remember them being quite good on day to day mainstream tech events. But now, whenever I open it, it feels like reading BuzzFeed or some other dumpster fire.
To give an example which was published just today: https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/5/23011810/elon-musk-twitter-sec-board-member-moderation
It starts with: "Ahahahahahaha fine. Longtime shitposter Elon Musk, who has a side gig as the CEO of Tesla, is on the board of Twitter, a newly minted meme stonk, after filing the wrong form with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Tremendous content."
So, question: does anybody else feel that way or was it always shit and I just didn't notice or am I just growing old?
Lastly, any recommendations on good mainstream day to day tech sites/blogs (as I won't be reading this trash anymore)?
I think its really really hard to make money producing online content. A lot of these companies start strong and have good intentions, but financially its not sustainable and they go into more click-bait and poorly written articles.
I haven't visited that site in a long time. Looking at the home page there isn't anything I would want.
Even arstechnica has gone downhill a bit.
Hacker news is a pretty good tech site but you know that.
phoronix is decent for linux stuff. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=home
Simply. Yes.
The quality of The Verge each time I look at is in slow decay and in their stories they either keep reporting misleading stories with obvious clickbait. Anything involving serious reports or numbers in their articles leads to nonsense in the content.
The comments section is also riddled with illiterates and somewhat infantile takes on directly attacking a person (because one of them don't like the person) or generally lacking any intelligent critical thinking skills. Perhaps it reflects on the contents of the article as well. For example, in the Epic v Apple post, it contained dire misinformation itself [0] and they never covered key critical points in the article that was relevant to the lawsuit.
> Lastly, any recommendations on good mainstream day to day tech sites/blogs (as I won't be reading this trash anymore)?
You should try the tech sections in FT.com, CNBC, or The Economist. Compared to them, The Verge is garbage.
[0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29170676
