A major controversy at the the time, now forgotten in many places, that still has significant relevance today. The article does a good job of contextualizing a number of issues at the nexus of academic and healthcare problems in the US.<p>Reading it makes me think this issue is worth revisiting as a way of learning about contemporary problems in medicine and academics.<p>I had an experience of going from one place that responded to the crisis by selling a academic hospital to another place that chose not to. They both developed their own sets of issues related to the decisions, and in hindsight I think the decision to sell to corporations or not was a red herring, as the real problems were broader and more systemic.
