HP Dev One Laptop with Pop_OS

I'm not going to critique this laptop as others have done here. Just over $1K for a laptop with an 8 core Ryzen, 16GB DDR4 and a 1TB SSD isn't outrageous.
The main takeaways I get from this are that HP is now getting on the Linux developer bandwagon, and that they chose Pop!_OS as their distro due to the success and reputation of System76. And I think these are both good things, and a sign that we'll see more of the same with laptop hardware vendors.

This isn’t a laptop I would personally buy for many of the reasons others have put in this thread, but it’s incredible to see such a focused SKU from HP here.
This will likely be a small volume product and it is almost certainly based on something else in the HP portfolio (advantage of being such a huge OEM), but it’s nice to see a developer marketed laptop in this way. And running a distro other than straight Ubuntu or Red Hat, even.
To me, this indicates that the market research teams at HP have seen the success of Framework and the various Clevo/Sager/Tongfang machines from Tuxedo, System76, XMG, etc. to see this as a viable market worth testing. Obviously, Dell has been doing this for years with the XPS Developer Edition or whatever they call it now, but it is nice to see a product from one of the other big laptop makers.

I want to like this, but I feel like 32GB of RAM is minimum if I were buying a new laptop. I’ve been heavily eyeing the Framework but I’d prefer AMD. This had AMD but is limited to 16GB of RAM… lots of unnecessary tradeoffs being made here.

It has a trackpoint with 2 buttons which tells us they did not put any serious effort into this input device. Would you use a 2 button mouse without scroll-wheel or a touchpad without 2-fingers scrolling?
I suspect this low effort goes for the whole product which is a budget laptop with marketing directed at decision makers instead of users.

That website is so bad, it misses all the important stuff. Any laptop from the last few years is easily fast enough for almost all developers. You don't need to tell developers that they can run multiple applications in parallel with 16GB of RAM. All this text about Popos could have been shortened to "100% linux compatible, no windows tax included".
What really matters for a dev laptop:
- keyboard: standard layout, great feel (like thinkpads 15 years ago; the keyboards have been gotten worse and worse since then)
- screen: resolution (personally I would like more than FHD), aspect ratio, viewing angles, reflectivity, color reproduction
- noise: is the machine completely silent in idle? Is it whisper quiet under heavy load? Does the fan remain off during short (<30s) load spikes?
- ports: How many USB? Ethernet? Thunderbolt for docking?
Also much more interesting than CPU/RAM:
- is the RAM user replacable?
- is the SSD user replacable? Can a second SSD be added?
- battery runtime?
brokenkebab2将近 3 年前
Can't say anything particularly critical towards the offer, but, dammit, copywriting is so ridiculous here: "multi-task like a pro with ... pro", or "run multiple apps in parallel" - wow, what a novelty. Could they save some time, and efforts, and just enumerate specs? Targeting for devs you probably will do better with less empty words

The 16:9 screen is an immediate turn off for me. on a machine of this size that extra screen real estate you get with 16:10 or even 3:2 is important to me. Shame too, because this could be the perfect machine for me.

I've been spoiled by Framework/Macbooks/some Chromebooks and wouldn't ever consider a laptop with a 16:9 screen instead of something like 3:2. I also hope the RAM isn't soldered to the board.
Other than those two nitpicks though this seems like a pretty solid offering. The fact they're only offering POP_OS! on a single laptop is probably both a blessing and a curse - it kinda sucks, but it also means hardware compatibility should be really solid.

Young me would have been surprised to learn that in the 2020s, computers were designed for non-programmers except for a few specialized ones.

That's interesting; I thought System76 made Pop!_OS specifically to have a distro tuned to their hardware, but assuming this is as official as it looks that implies that they've started going for licensing it out to other vendors

I think this would make a nice secondary machine for those interested in an accessible Linux distro. Pop!_OS is intuitive and recognizable from a functionality standpoint for newbies and pros alike. I will keep my eye on it, and see where it goes. The price point seems to be at a good place.

What is with those arrow keys? Who wants double wide half height up and down keys? 2 x 0.5 does not equal one full sized key.
Am I really to believe that relabeling the win key to super is some sort of engineering feat?

Looking at the keyboard layout makes me wonder. How many devs here actually use the right shift key and/or the right modifier keys? I've been programming for 20 years (15 or so using emacs) and I exclusively use the left shift and left modifiers. I probably have never used the (physically) right shift/modifier keys on the keyboard I'm currently typing on that I've had for 2 years.
I loathe the four left modifier key layout on keyboards which is probably why I hate typing on my Macbook. It would be nice if I could have a fat left control key with the fn key on the right somewhere.

The pointer stick is a really great thing to have assuming it works well. That said, my muscle memory would be decimated by the lack of a middle button. On Thinkpads, holding this makes the pointer stick scroll, making it a lot more useful than if it only middle clicked.

Cursor arrow key layout fail.
Devs use cursor keys more than anyone and they didn't prioritise a layout you can easily hit with muscle memory. I know because my current laptop has a layout like this machine and it sucks

Is it for real, or are they just advertising "pre-orders" to see if there's a market?
A major company should not be taking "pre-orders". That's for Kickstarters. It's not like making this requires much development. It's basically a standard HP laptop with Linux pre-installed. And you get a special keytop to replace the "Windows" key.

Glad to see the inclusion of the "menu" key. Most HP laptops from the past several years haven't included one, but as a keyboard-first user, I can't live without one!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menu_key

Dear HP, you've also made a great repairable Linux Tablet, the Elite X2 (G4 & G8) which was discontinued this year. Consider bringing it back with a 3k2k OLED display and a wired & bluetooth keyboard/Trackpad (like you had on the HP zbook x2 G4) and get a decent marketing team.
The folks at https://reddit.com/r/ergomobilecomputers will thank you.

Regardless of all of the specs I would say that the biggest thing I would be interested in would be the the screen aspect ratio. 3:2 vs 16:9 is really important.

Is this a custom laptop or a different SKU of an existing one? I haven’t seen a recent EliteBook so I can’t identify it on sight anymore, unfortunately.

Parts of this look neat... why do they refer to the memory as a fixed factor, though? Is this really a single-SKU product without configuration options?

Awesome, I love my ZBook x360 it is a great laptop and I can see that this new Dev One laptop inherits many design elements from the ZBook line. Linux is the cherry on top!
Edit: after signing up for the updates I've found this comment in the bottom of the email: "The content of this email is intended only for U.S. residents". Does this suggest that HP will release this laptop only for the U.S. market?

I am not a fan of HP, their quality control is horrible but it's a good sign that companies are moving in the right direction on Linux. It goes to show that they realize the market for it is there and that, for all my misgivings about the company, is a good thing for them and for us. I genuinely hope it's a great laptop and an exception to the rule.

I wonder if this is a sign that HP is looking to purchase System76.
If so, I wonder where that leaves Pop_OS?

Interesting play. Guess they're like why not court some linux devs....and/or people at "Pop!_OS" were pressuring them for a collab? Not my realm of activity really but never heard of Pop! until now

It is cool to see this trend. Now, if you want truly nice Linux laptop - get a refurbished Dell 9710 with 64gb of RAM, Nvidia card and 2tb nvme storage with 4k display. Will end up sightly more, but I expect it to last for awhile.

This is a great start, and I'm really happy to see HP offering a Linux offering. Spec wise, love seeing 1TB of storage. The 14" screen size is great, but I do hope they offer a QHD or 4k screen option.

16G is not much RAM for a developer laptop. Do they understand what developers do these days? ie: running entire prod infrastructure using kubernetes or docker-compose on their dev setup is increasingly common.

This looks almost exactly like the ProBook 440/640/645 G8. It looks like an old design with new hardware, rebranded for developers. Curious to see what the build looks like.

16GB RAM? Is it upgradable or can it be configured higher? If not, why in god's name would you have 16GB RAM as a selling point?
FHD at 14"? That's more than usable sure, but I'd prefer at least 2560x1440, preferably 2560x1600; A 16:9 aspect ratio is a pain in the ass.
4 years ago, these specs (if you can even call it that, we've been given almost no information) would have been decent. Now? This just seems desperate.
EDIT: I know this is quite critical. I like that there is a laptop out there from a traditional OEM, that is being supplied with Pop! OS. I just wish it was a better laptop, because the person looking for a laptop with Pop! OS is more than likely going to be looking for one with decent specs and may have enough additional income to spend on those specs. Other than the 1TB drive (I'm happy with 256GB in a lot of cases thanks to my NAS and streaming), this feels like the bare minimum specs for a laptop in 2022.
