Stateless Kubernetes overlay networks with IPv6

Is there any reason to use a tunnel over just adding an IP to the node inside the local network? The devices already seem to see each other over ens37 from what I can tell?

10,000 is a lot of matchsticks, wouldn't want to to manage a "large" cluster with or without Kubernetes.
