I'm not surprised to hear about this.
The high growth "move fast and break things" approach of silicon valley is all well and good when the stakes are low, e.g. when what's at stake is my lunch or interactions with a friend's social media post or my vanity smoothie. It's a recipe for disaster when it comes to consumer products that can kill or maim when they fail, where neglecting edge cases (what happens when children use our products that are intended for adults) might mean lifelong disability or death.
The materials used in these bikes are utter junk -- really this company is a hollow shell that is not much more than its branding. And this year workers in their repair + retail shops have been unionizing in the face of poor treatment and conditions.
Now with this bad press, I'm hoping they're in for a reckoning that will force them to put more emphasis on quality in their products and operations, or at least go to zero quickly before their products kill someone else.
