My colleague wants a new laptop to run windows and train tensorflow models on the cpu; something with lots of cpu cores that will train cpu-based tensorflow models fast.
My suggestion was a MacBook Pro M1max but they want an off the shelf windows machine.
Any specific suggestions?
Doesn't matter how many cores it has, the CPU in a laptop will always be thermally throttled once you give it real work. Is it viable to use a basic laptop instead and run the training on a remote workstation?
If your colleague has the budget for an M1 Max, then he/she probably has the budget for a mobile workstation like the Dell Precision 7xxx series and Lenovo P1/X1 Extreme. One may also look into boutique PC builders such as Origin PC (now owned by Corsair), Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, and Maingear. Last I checked one could directly email Origin PC for custom requirements, however that may have changed since the acquisition.
