Ask HN: How has deactivating/deleting social media benefitted you?

11 点作者 rblion超过 2 年前
I've gone without any form of Meta apps or Twitter for almost a month. It feels like quitting a bad habit, you don't notice how much it influences you until you stop.
I notice my creativity has increased, my drive to connect in person has increased, my love of reading/writing has increased, my thinking has become more clear. Overall, I just feel happier.

I quit Facebook ten years ago, Twitter two years ago and Reddit one year ago, deleting all my accounts. It's been great, no downsides whatsoever.
There are a handful of niche hobbyist forums that I still have accounts on, but I don't consider those to be social media, in that they're not psychologically manipulating me to engage.
That said, I'll still browse Reddit and Twitter for specific purposes occasionally, but I don't feel compelled to participate any more. Just feels like a waste of time.
Instead I've been using my free time creatively: writing software, composing music, reading actual physical books.
To anyone trapped in the social media bubble, I would recommend giving it all up. When you die, no-one will give a damn about your tweets, Facebook posts, Twitter comments. It's worthless chatter, done to feed the advertising machine. You don't need it.

I quit FB a couple of years ago when the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke out. I quit WhatsApp when they unilaterally changed their privacy policies to share within the Meta group of companies and migrated to Signal (most of my friends group that kept in touch on WhatsApp moved to a Signal group).
I continue to have LinkedIn (somehow, it seems to be a professional network, although of late it has become a dumpster fire with incessant sales pitches and motivational posts. The only reason I still have it is to keep in touch with former professional colleagues I have interacted with over 25+ years who also are on it).
Everyone who needs to get hold of me has my phone number / email. They know how to reach me. So, I don't miss soc-media. It has freed up an incredible amount of time that was previously wasted.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but deactivating Facebook when I was 19 years old has benefitted me in no ways. I am now 27 years old, I hate Facebook, but the old ways of socializing are basically extinct where I live: even at University everything was organized through Whatsapp/Facebook and various Student/Town Associations do not have a website and use Facebook/Instagram.

I love it, the less I use social media (HN gets a pass, I enjoy it here and find it to be a notch above your typical social media) the more I am at peace with myself. I stay in touch with my family and friends via letters, emails, texts or phone calls. It works out well and I generally recommend it to anyone who is thinking about taking the leap.

I quit FB in 2015 and has been working remotely since then. It's good at first until I realized I'm a complete lone wolf. You have to find new social circle and activities before it's too late. Good part is still good, you just have to prevent some disadvantages.

That question is like asking if anyone has quit TV and telephone pretty much... hah.
Social Media is not a guilty pleasure (like alcohol or candy) for people that need to promote their own business to strangers and reach them online... These days, it's an essential tool for most lines of business...
Especially when a company or individual doesn't have vast sums of money to simply pay a marketing team to promote their business.
If you have a brand, social media enables almost anyone to completely hijack your brand's presence with little recourse until the damage is already done if you don't claim your profile before a squatter does... I don't register everywhere, but I do on everything that is major.
I am by no means addicted, I just post what I think is noteworthy and then get T.F. off of it all.... All of my notifications are turned off regularly for all apps, so that it doesn't draw me back in when I want to be truly offline.
I miss messages all the time from friends who are regular users, and can't explain to them why turning off notifications is a great thing for anyone's mental health.
The thing I get most irked by with social media is how it manipulates people into using and oversharing on it, and into doing anything for the pitiful carrots of views and likes it gives back. I am tired of the revolving door of talk about how smart the algorithms are and how astuded corporate leadership is.
The real truth is that they operate like a casino, where they always manage to win more than everyone else, and most people that use it simply lose, and many lose everything.
I treat it all like a casino though, I don't risk money, I just hang out until I see an opportunity to win in small ways for free. I also have my own web sites, so that they are not in full control. The casinos hate people like me, but they only like people who surrender their money and follow their script, so who wants that kind of friend anyway...?
I understand the ideal of quitting for people that simply don't need to use social media at all though, and I mostly enjoy meeting with and talking to people in real life without the modern Internet's nonsense involved... I hope I find enough business success to make sure that I won't need to do any marketing work at all ever again... But only when that happens can I get rid of social media.

I have not deactivated them, just stopped visit ones. Now I have spare time for hobbies I always dreamed of.
