Making sure the newest OS allowed people to run their old programs was a huge win for Microsoft because it meant that people were more willing to pay for the upgrade. As Microsoft moves to forcing upgrades onto users I wonder how long they'll worry about maintaining compatibility. The last version of Windows I installed was Windows 7 Professional and it included a means for my old 32bit apps to work, but for your typical windows 10 users the OS already doesn't give them an option.
