This is why the mainstream gets angry with "progressives". What if we lifted everyone out of poverty and didn't make it based on race or class?
I still point to Sanders and his messaging. It was big picture. It constantly reminded people of what we all should expect out of a decent economy, reminded people of the injustice inherent in our taxes and corporate culture, and proposed programs that helped all citizens have more dignity and security.
If I were to be charitable, I would say they don't have enough money for all homeless so they thought they'd spice it up with sympathetic restrictions. More cynically, a trans special interest group may have lobbied for it or else would have blocked a UBI pilot if it didn't help trans people specifically.
Either way, a major political failure right off the bat for the progressive movement.
