>And now that I look back, I recognize how important his open ear was. I’m thankful for that. And I’m working on ways to pay that forward.
Its a problem as old a time. Evolutionary we have been built to watch out for #1. You have to even in today's age, nobody else there to make sure you dont walk into traffic.
It's something which must be taught to people; the power of listening. Surprising your brother had learnt this and not both of you. This knowledge comes from parents/family; they dont teach this in school. Ironically, this knowledge is what builds society/community. Interestingly there's 2 more advanced skills which you find.
Honesty and enthusiasm.
If you are dishonest sometimes, the dishonesty from previous interactions hijacks the current advice. Can be the same for sarcastic people, people sometimes question if you're giving a sarcastic answer. It's an impediment for people.
Enthusiasm is also important, you can listen to people tell their stories and such. Give approval for the work, but if you don't go this little extra mile of making them enthusiastic about the future of the work. It just sets people off like nobodies business.
