> I don't want to work for one company for 10 years.
I've been freelancing for 10 years. A few months ago, after a post-burnout sabbatical, I decided to look for a full time job as a regular employee.
During an interview I got asked the classic question "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" Not used to it, I fumbled, and my mind decided to answer honestly: to run a business of mine, and having technical oversight over entire projects.
That's not what the interviewer expected; they wanted me to hear how would I serve that company for the next 5 years. It was obvious I completely flunked my interview, and it was also obvious that going back to being an employee was a terrible idea. I do not want to give 40+ hours of my time to some other people working on stuff I do not care about. Sure, it can be satisfying, but chances are, I would not be very passionate about their product, and if I was, I would want to build my vision of it, not theirs.
At least a freelancer I can fire clients, raise my rates, work every other day, or on a beach. Better than full time employment, but you're still working on someone else's idea.
The end goal now is start a one-man business so I can dedicate my life on projects I care about, with freelancing to tide me over until I am ramen profitable.
