Desertification was already in progress when mankind started their seemingly irreversible mark on the globe. Sadly despite knowing or wishing better, we let greed dictate the terms. It's not all our fault, just some industries hire very good spin doctors to plant ideas and shape political systems.<p>I guess some people would rather just give up, rather than fight to change the status quo - imagine if it was such that corporates, their profits have strings attached ... to not just their well being but those strings pass on to their offspring, as well as the offspring of friends, top tier shareholders, who benefited from their pillage that they considered "not so bad." Yes it might be finally decided 50 years down the track they were wrong ... but oh my, you could bet almost immediately there'd be a lot of better decisions.<p>In years to come once desalination is large scale and economical, I would speculate there would be a fight by some to save the deserts, rather than be landscaped and re-vegetated with crops or other vegetation.<p>I won't comment on transhumanism or any other fanciful ideas raised for over half the article ...
