Colonialism history aside, Thanksgiving has been my favorite holiday because no gifts are involved other than time spent together in conversation, play, and making food. I would like to enjoy Christmastime, but the taint of commercialism (think the Wheel of Time taint, not Urban Dictionary taint, but I guess that works, too) really gets in the way. We now mostly focus on gifts for the children, but even that feels forced and overdone.
It takes my daughter weeks to open all her presents from extended family because she doesn't seem to care about getting stuff, she just wants to play, and we have so much already. Admirable perspective, and inspired by her I'm more-quickly undoing my habits of acquisition (videogames being the latest to go, once it sunk in that I'm paying both money and potential time, and I don't want to spend all that time on games anymore) established in childhood.<p>I hope these low-light days (in the winter hemisphere, anyway) are healthy for you all, one way or another.
