I think dependence on any centralised 'authority' for useful medical and scientific guidance is almost useless. They're full of corruption, profiteering and shortcuts in the interests of things other than peoples' health.
What saddens me is that I think the most important medical resource available is disappearing in many places: the local family GP.
The doctor that is aware of your family history, the environment you live in, your diet, the local society ailments and passing illnesses, enhanced with their research and network of other doctors. This gives the best chance of diagnosing with good assumptions and educated guesses.
Being so mobile now and people relying on hospitals and random doctors is highlighting the issues with the literature and governing bodies: they're not that smart, make bad assumptions and have too much pressure on them to give proper attention.
