I have traveled extensively too and cannot disagree with anything that was written. I would like to stress that while some places the poor experience lies with the end sites placing restrictions, my personal experience is the governments are primary reason for the bad experience. In part there are cultural differences behind the governments placing regulations on their local internet, but theres fault with the site operators too.
For example in many Asian countries they filter and block US and Western European sites with impunity but do not do the same from Chinese sites. Why aren't the giant companies in western democracies lobbying these countries to remove the blocks or change the rules? These companies clearly have no issues dumping money towards political agendas but why not this? I suspect they don't want to risk their own a ability to service China so they stay quiet.
These companies are complicit in allowing China to seize and hold sway of the people's of many countries. These companies are betraying the core values that allowed them to grow to such large sizes. Unfortunately the US government also seems not to care either.
So what you're left with is a massive percentage of the population that, for example, has no idea who tank man is and what he was doing. China has learned well from US big tech and has applied their influence without opposition and now quite literally welcomed.
