The noise here, Twitter and elsewhere is way too loud and much more self-fulling prophecies than anything else. Apart from the layoffs of course, which are 100% a result of companies and VCs that prioritized growth over profitability.
Let’s keep on building awesome things and just turn off Twitter and Co. for a while.
<3
I turned Twitter off in 2020. It was easy since I had experience disconnecting, I got rid of my TV and radio in 2010 :)
I agree it helps to focus, but unfortunately investors and CEOs are plugged in and enter into panic mode (at least my CEO started panicking after SVB) so we are still affected by those 'self fulfilling prophecies', at least my current workplace is. I wish I was running a profitable business so I would not rely on investors to fund me or CEO to pay me :)
It is interesting though, I get steady amount of recruitment calls, all from smaller companies. There is hope!
I find there's a balance. You don't want to be heads down and miss a big trend or a new tool that will save you tons of time.
But you also don't want to be in the "noise", as you put it, all the time.
I struggle with this a bit myself, but I probably pay too much attention to the noise, so appreciate your exhortation.
Probably a great time to mention the `noprocrast` option. You should listen to others and figure out who's wrong: you, or everyone else? Sometimes you have a rare perspective that makes you see something others are blind to. Other times you are delusional.
Listen to the noise, but understand that it's often missing key insights.
It's upto us to decide. NFTs was a thing in past. It went away slowly. Yes, things are evolving and new products are coming everyday but not everything would help us to "make the world a better place"
Idk, after a tiring day of building awesome things, the noise helps me sleep.
HN amps up the noise quite a bit. People were loud about the Russian war, about crypto, COVID, Trump, anything. Most of the panic never really mattered; nobody talks about Russian bots taking over HN anymore. No more apps telling you not to touch your face. But it gets amped up like a speaker in a small cave.
