I'm a compSci student and am looking for some ideas for a fun project to do to fill out my programming portfolio over the summer break. I have a list of my own ideas but most are overly ambitious for something to do over a single summer. Most of my interest in programming involve video games but I want to expand my realm of interests to something perhaps unfamiliar to me. Thanks!
There's lots of projects on GitHub which tag some issues as "good first issue" or something similar. Check the projects you already use / are already invested in to see if there's something fun to do there.
For example if you're interested in Rails, https://github.com/rails/rails/labels/good%20first%20issue
