Ah, human rights and India. Okay, let's have a conversation about castes.
The caste system was hated and denigrated by the British Empire, for better or worse, so laws and decrees were passed to ensure the abolition of the caste system along with its attendant discrimination and exclusion. These laws had mixed success but I suppose they made some "progress" from the status quo ante.
However, the Empire was unsuccessful in eradicating all features of caste from Hindustani society and guess what? They began educating and exporting tech workers to the West, particularly these United States.
So the situation we have today is that Hindus, Indians, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, and Pakistanis are highly sought and hired to every level and role in the tech sector, and they're bringing their castes along with them. Fiefdoms and inner circles develop in the tech industry while lip service is given to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
I think folks on the outside can't often comprehend the subtle, invisible distinctions among South Asian people, because it may not be a question of skin color, language spoken, or other outward features, but may manifest itself in terms of diet, or merely the company one keeps.
