Why did Apple abandon the web?

3 点作者 vsgherzi将近 2 年前
I've recently learned that apple created html canvas. Why did they stop? Wasn't the original vision for the iPhone to only use the browser? Is there no money in the space? Surely a company as large as Apple could create new web based standards in safari to increase their stronghold over their ecosystem. (not saying it's a good thing)

Because the AppStore is an hilariously profitable gravy train, thanks to the 30% cut.<p>TBH I am surprised Apple even allows Safari shortcuts on the homescreen.

The appstore is a monopoly platform for Apple. If they will create a web ecosystem they will have to share the cake with other providers (cdn, hosting, serving, etc.).

You say this as if Apple doesn&#x27;t participate in standards development at all anymore.
