Critics are right. It's inefficient use of capital.<p>It can take few decades before DAC can get into $100/t of CO2 region where spending capital is justified. Government investments into DAC R&D should increase, of course, but large scale projects now are waste of resources. It's like throwing money into electric cars in 80's.<p>Carbon capture and storage or utilization directly from industrial processes can be cost effective even today. Making steelmaking, cement manufacture, or pulp & paper industry carbon neutral or even carbon negative could be scaled up in the near future.
