Received this email from Google today:
Important changes to your Google Domains account – Squarespace announces purchase of domain registrations
Squarespace recently announced that it had entered into an agreement to purchase all domain name registrations and related customer accounts from Google Domains. As you're a valued customer, we wanted to make you aware of the following important information.
What happens now?
There's nothing you need to do at this time. Your domain will continue to operate and be managed by Google until it's time to move to Squarespace. That won't happen until after the transaction has been closed and the migration process begins, which is likely to take place over the next few months.
What happens next?
All customers will be moved to Squarespace Domains in the coming months. You'll be notified once your domain has been moved. Squarespace Domains is an independent domain registrar service provided by Squarespace.
Squarespace has publicly committed to continuing to utilise Google Cloud DNS infrastructure, meaning reliability and performance in terms of DNS will remain unchanged during the migration.
The purchase is currently subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. Upon the closing of the transaction, your domain account will be owned by Squarespace but you'll continue to manage your domain(s) via Google Domains as you do today, with Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service continuing to apply.
Of all the google services for them to sunset Google Domains was not one I was not ready for, but lesson learned. I've been trying to decide where to move to since the announcement.
Name.com is my tried and true fall back, but dyndot is pretty appealing with their app which is something I've wanted from a registrar for awhile. Just wish they offered more domain TLDs.
So my plan is to use dynadot for domains they support, and Name.com for everything else.
It's a real shame. Personally avoiding Google services from now on.
There's been some similar question when Google originally annouced the sale.
"Ask HN: Where are you moving your Google domains to?" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36364519
"Ask HN: Who should I use for Domain Names since Google Domains has been sold?"
