This article is focused on software development, but I think there is a more general point to be made. When I started working in big corporations, I discovered something that upset me and that I still haven't fully digested- and it's that money doesn't really seem to matter, at least not in the same way it does for normal people. It's perfectly normal for big companies to bleed money in all directions, from the benefits and very generous salaries paid to some employees, to extremely expensive contracts that bring no value at all. Yet nobody bats an eyelid. In time I've grown used to it and tried to reframe it as something that makes perfect sense at those scales. In this sense Elon Musk's approach is truly refreshing, as it reaffirms the simple fact that money is a limited resource and should be used for stuff that really matters and brings value; and this extremely obvious tenet seems to be one of the cores of his success: do not freaking waste money in useless stuff, check the costs and make sure that they're justified. Wow.
