I kind of wonder how did people not know this was a thing? Salt magnifies flavors we like and mutes flavors that we don't almost as if we evolved this way to know to use this essential nutrient. I personally don't salt my coffee because I almost exclusively just drink coffee at home and have the brand that I like.
One of the things that I will salt that a lot of people find odd is beer on occasion. There are some beers that I like and there are some that are just okay and they just okay ones are the ones that get salt. Often times going out with friends there's not always a beer that I like adding salt to a just okay beer does the exact same effect that they describe in this article. Same thing with fruit smoothies if you're not adding a pinch of salt you're doing it wrong, shakes and malts, and all kinds of other things that I guess people never thought that needed salt.
I think the perception is that a lot of people will salt foods to the point that they taste salty. Many times that is the wrong way to season foods. Some food preparations are intended to be salty most of the time the salt is there to act as a magnifier for the flavors and it should not be something you actively taste. If your primary experience is when you add salt you add so much that it's salty of course you wouldn't think about adding it to drinks and other things that you wouldn't want the salty flavor in.
