Ask HN: Will AI image creation hurt camera sales?

2 点作者 ugurturgut超过 1 年前
Artificial intelligence has been revolutionizing a multitude of industries over the past years, and photography is no exception. Imagine being able to capture the perfect photograph without traveling across the world, investing in thousands of dollars' worth of equipment, or even physically pressing a shutter. How? Simply by describing it to an AI-powered tool.
Now, to many photography enthusiasts, this might seem like a diminution of the art and craftsmanship of photography. However, for many others, it offers a novel perspective and approach to what photography can be.
Adobe's new AI, Firefly, is impressively proficient at producing lifelike images. So much so, that it has the potential to significantly disrupt stock photo sales. In the near future, we might even see platforms like Adobe Stock being replaced or overshadowed by paid AI services like Firefly.
Does this spell the end for photography? Certainly not. However, it might signify a decline in camera sales and an evolution in our understanding of hobbyist and professional photography. In a few years' time, when someone mentions "camera," it could be primarily associated with a niche hobby or a collector's item.
In conclusion, AI-driven image creation is reshaping the future of photography. This evolution presents both exciting opportunities and challenges for consumers and artists alike. What you think about that?

AI is certainly reshaping everything and the way I'm seeing it is that it's going to be the superpower of the 21st century.
As for photography, I'm not sure if it can entirely replace cameras. Maybe not for the next few years, but if a genius new way of easily capturing your face structure is mainstreamed and you have a digital avatar of your face, it could actually happen. In that case you could just enter some prompts for the scene and other details and it would generate a perfect image you couldn't even take on your own in any way.
