It is interesting to note that even the KMT is (overall) not seeking reunification with China, nor is the DPP seeking official recognition of Taiwan as an independent country at the expense of peace. What seems to be a consensus here is that the Taiwanese are better off keeping the status quo, with the cursor for political division being swaying more towards China or more towards the west.<p>The only way I can explain the narrative of the left in France (for instance JL. Mélenchon), the UK (Craig Murray etc.), the US (Noam Chomsky): absolute anti-Americanism and a pinch of racism, the locals are simply too dumb to know what is in their best interest. The Taiwanese have built a very progressive and open society against all odds and against everyone, it should be obvious that they are perfectly capable of not being dragged in a war they don't want.
