Turns out, Meta's Threads is good for breaking news

This seems like a native advertising piece. The article's own screenshots of popular Threads posts on the OpenAI story have less than 1% of the engagement of similar posts on Twitter/X, so it's a bit meaningless to point to these as evidence that Threads is "up for the task" of handling a major news event.

The article doesn’t even try to make the case for the headline or lead, what a bizarre piece. The OpenAI drama is the biggest case for Twitter supremacy in months.

Matt Levine mentioned in a recent newsletter he would be using Threads more than Twitter from now on. He never tweeted that much so it doesn't really matter, but it's an interesting move given how much he talks about Elon.

The other question is how often do you need to hear about "breaking news" immediately? For me the answer is almost never. Glancing at various news media websites occasionally is more than adequate for me.

Thanks, but I'm sticking to Twitter (Screw that, I'm not calling it "X") and HN has proved pretty useful for tech drama, er breaking news

Everything happened on Twitter/X. This is just hopeful nonsense advertising.

So how's it doing right now? The big story right now is that someone tried to use a car to ram the immigration checkpoint into Canada at the Rainbow Bridge near Niagara Falls. The car blew up. Two people in the car dead, no other casualties.
Press coverage is terrible. The clickbait headline systems are producing fact-free headlines, such as "FBI investigating explosion at US-Canadian border". There is, inevitably, surveillance camera imagery. But it's not linked on CNN. Just talking heads and useless pictures of cops milling around the aftermath. Fox at least has "NY vehicle explosion at Rainbow Bridge border crossing, two dead." NBC News is paywalled. The New York Daily News, which is historically good at violent crime coverage, has a decent story.
The US anti-terrorism people are freaking out over this, closing border crossings, cancelling flights, and similar security theater.
So what does Meta Threads have to say?

Threads is an arguably better experience than X, but no one is using it.

This article is dubious.

Gretchen stop trying to make "threads" happen.
