I think “change agents” in any context get over idolized. Or over despised.
When Obama was president, it struck me how many liberal friends idolized him as a perceived uber-liberal. And how many conservative friends despised him, also for being a perceived uber-liberal, but with completely different rationalizations.
Yet to me, many of his choices seemed to be moderate and he continued down many paths not so differently from his predecessor, a Republican president.
His “radical” healthcare plan was mostly about requiring people buy their own health insurance (very market & personal responsibility friendly), an approach previously pioneered by a Republican governor.
My take is anyone associated with big changes gets wrapped in highly inaccurate, but highly sticky, narratives.
And many of these widespread narratives tend to be all love or all hate.
