Hello everyone,
I’m Stefano, a programmer deeply interested in education.
I’m leading a project aimed at demystifying digital devices for elementary school children. We’re about to embark on the second phase and I’m seeking insights from this great community.
Our journey began in a public school in Italy, where we introduced programming through an “analogical language”. This approach involved the use of the body, cooperation between students and other classroom activities that mirrored programming logic, including logical operators and conditions. The use of Scratch was a key part of this phase, allowing students to apply these concepts in a digital format.
The upcoming phase in January marks a significant transition. We’re starting with disassembling old computers to give the children a hands-on understanding of the hardware that powers digital technology. This practical approach aims to reveal the workings behind everyday digital devices and services.
The ultimate goal is to foster a deeper understanding of the technology that surrounds us. By demystifying the inner workings of computers and software, we hope to ignite a curiosity about the science and engineering behind their favorite devices and apps. This project isn’t just about teaching coding; it’s about unveiling the “magic” behind digital technology.
In this next phase, I’m contemplating the use of languages like p5.js to bridge their newfound hardware knowledge with software development. As we delve deeper into the complexities of technology, I’m eager to hear from those who have experience in teaching young learners about coding, hardware, and the interplay between the two.
I’m undertaking this initiative as a volunteer, dedicated to making a difference and I’m not perceiving any financial compensation.
Your feedback, resources, and personal experiences in this area will be invaluable. They will not only guide the development of this initiative but also contribute to an open-source framework and knowledge base for educators and enthusiasts globally.
I appreciate any advice or stories you can share. Your support and motivation are essential in shaping this educational journey.
Thank you in advance for your help and insights!
