I think X is in decline, but probably relevant for a while longer. I logged out weeks ago and don't feel like I'm missing out most of the time. There don't seem to be any great alternatives, maybe we could chill out on social media use for a while, as a society
It may become hyper fragmented, which is probably not a problem, or one we can make less so
Despite its recent controversy, it's still worth the investment. The initial cold start can put people off, but you have to build an audience the hard way, and there's no shortcuts to doing that. I use it to link out to blog posts. I don't do the microblogging thing, and prefer to use it as a linkdump for my blogposts.
If you have an account in X, by all means maintain it, and utilize it but if you're starting out, odds are it'll be a wasted effort.
First, it's almost impossible for new accounts to get visibility due to algorithm changes. Maybe it's better if you pay for a golden badge, but you'll be paying $12k/year for what exactly?
There's a good chance X is headed to becoming the next MySpace. As such, investing in it going forward is likely unwise. Mine what you can and redirect your users to all your other locations so you have a plan B as/when X fades into obscurity. I think most people feel like this as well.
