This is not surprising. After Blair/Blunket failed to get the ID card introduced in the late noughties, the voter registration procedure started to require one's National Insurance number (never intended for this purpose), all very handy for a de facto national database. I know quite a few people who stopped registering to vote then. Now the Tories have introduced an ID requirement (passport or similar) in the polling stations in addition to the voting card sent to your address. Obviously intended to dissuade the poor and marginal, but rather backfired in also disproportionately discouraging the old, their natural electoral base.

What I find misleading is the pronounced effect it is going to have on the elections although we know that there are far fewer wealthy people compared to poorer ones, there are no numbers to suggest how it will change anything as well. It should include that the trend for the people to become more conservative with age has also changed in the recent years.
The gist I get here is that people in the UK got poorer over time.

There are several perplexing aspects of UK elections:
* They allow me to vote (possibly due to colonial Commonwealth guilt). * You cast a vote using a pencil. How is there no voting fraud? * They elect only one person per district. In areas where there is a 50-50 split in the voter base, half the population is not represented.

I am from Eastern Europe. Everyone is given Citizen ID card when reaches 15 years old, that is used for identification during voting. It seems like a completely mindboggling concept for UK and USA for that matter.
