I decided while my usual work is closed for a month over the Christmas period to do some independent contracting doing my same job, but in a place that is severely short staffed, where I could charge far higher amounts of money.
It also meant I got free travel and accommodation in a different part of my country and a break from my usual family responsibilities.
What I have enjoyed most about my decision is actually the fact that I had to hit the ground running, working in a busy environment that I was unfamiliar with, and where I knew none of the pre-existing teams. It was way outside of my comfort zone, and I was particularly proud of myself because none of the technical equipment was the same, and there was no one to show me how to use it (because they’re so short of people who do what I do), instead I was heavily reliant on my base knowledge of biophysics, and also years of experience to check and fix things. I had thought I had long forgotten all the stuff I learned in my degree that I needed to do my job, up until this point, where I realised I hadn’t forgotten it, but rather it has all become second nature. I also realised just how much my experience makes a difference to how well I can just get on and do stuff. In my usual job, I had just been promoted to orientating/educating new grads and I did wonder what I should focus on in my teaching, I think my experience in this instant makes me value more the importance of understanding the underlying principles of the technology we work with, rather than getting caught up in the finer details which is what I’ll try to emphasise when I’m teaching<p>So, I guess this holiday I’m working on professional development, and building on my experience.
I also find the break from my family incredibly refreshing - even if this is a time of year that is typically family oriented. I will still spend Christmas Day with my family and I’m looking forward to spending quality time with them.
