I'd like to see a strong cohort of institutions experiment with an alternative academic evaluation system, much like a robust political system or a monopoly-free market, where competing approaches better serve the consumer. This new approach could aim for a more holistic and fair assessment, recognizing a wide array of contributions – prioritizing research excellence, emphasizing quality and real-world impact, teaching effectiveness, mentorship, community service, leadership roles, public engagement, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Implementing a balanced scorecard system with customizable weights for different disciplines and a diverse panel for peer review could foster healthy competition and innovation in academia. The goal here is to encourage a well-rounded academic career, acknowledge diverse contributions, and foster a more inclusive environment. I suspect it would be truly beneficial to see something akin to this in academia, promoting diversity and excellence in ways that mirror the advantages seen in competitive, diverse markets.
