When you buy an ICE car today you are buying a very mature product. YoY the performance characteristics stay mostly the same, and for commuting you don’t need all that powerful of an engine. The differences I see between model years is mostly style, gadgets and infotainment.<p>I would love to buy an EV. But buying an EV today is like buying a Palm Treo in 2004.<p>There are alternative battery chemistries on the horizon: Sodium, Potassium and Aluminium. And new designs for electrical motors and discussion for transmission systems.<p>AFAIK the only auto maker that has demonstrated a consumer reusable battery and thus a gateway to upgrade to new battery chemistries as they become available is NIO. And NIO is not for sale in the U.S. nor would I trust the brand.
