His appointment was based on an ambitious ‘Proposal for a Research Program on the Relations Between the Activities of the Brain, Body and Mind’. Combining communications theory, neurophysiology, and psychoanalysis, his aim was to use new brain-mapping techniques to physically locate and manipulate behavioural correlates in the brains of monkeys, cats, humans, and later dolphins.</i>
