Code-switching is an important part of forming social connections between different groups of people. Failure to meet on common grounds, be that in voice tone, fashion, expressions and sentence structure, body language etc. can lead to non-preferential treatment.
I'm not defending a social injustice when I say that I act differently around farmers than I do around punks or businesspeople, but it really is important to be part of the same 'group' if you want to succeed with that group.
Vocal fry might go down well amongst a young woman's friends, but if the people around you chafe at that... maybe speak in a more natural tone?
