US car industry will get hammered.
The reason is that the US has set protectionism barriers to Chinese cars, making it's national market less competitive, as they no longer need to compete with China.
Long-term, American car makers will be behind everybody else, as for example, German car makers are now making cars in China and trying to innovate and compete, despite also being behind Chinese car manufacturers.
Only Tesla and Rivian seems to be investing in the supply chain needed to make electric cars in the US, but that is still minimal in comparison to the capex of Chinese car companies.
The whole world is dependent on Chinese batteries, they have also neatly integrated companies, controls lots of lithium...
The US should remove the taxes in Chinese imports and pump money in making sure it can make lots of batteries and has a thriving EV industry. If they do, the auto manufacturers will follow suit.
The auto manufacturers can't make their products competitive themselves.
The same way US made drilling oil a priority after crisis in the middle east, it needs to make it a priority to jump into the EV race.
Otherwise China will, because it is a priority for them and they are leading. They will sell BYDs around the world.
BYD's are built so well, better than Teslas for sure, but also similar to Japanese/Korean cars. The world will see how reliable they are and by then, nobody will remember of Ford anymore.
