The Affinity and Canva Pledge

I paid for Affinity Photo because of its reasonably priced perpetual license, being a great alternative to Adobe's tools for my work.
Canva's business model revolves around cloud based services, and subscription licensing, and I don't see how Canva will keep both pricing models available in the long term. The linked "pledge" is just a canned public relations soundbite during this merger process, until six months later when they pull the plug and mandate subscriptions.
Call me cynical, but I've seen this happen time and again. Parallels is another product I'd been using for ages until they switched to subscriptions.

> If we do offer a subscription, it will only ever be as an option alongside the perpetual model, for those who prefer it
Canva is into AI.
They will most certainly add AI features in affinity.
You cannot run proprietary AI models (ie. the secret sauce) locally or people will steal them.
So… the models will run in the cloud.
Running cloud services costs money.
You cannot have a perpetual model (ie. pay once, use forever) for an AI enabled cloud product. Especially very expensive cloud GPUs. It’s just basic economic fact.
So, we can expect a future where there are different tiers of affinity products for subscription and non subscription users, maybe with a credits model, like photoshop.
Canva knows this.
Everyone knows this.
So… you know. It’s bit of a laugh really.
Translation: hey guys, please don’t freak out and boycott / abandon the thing will just decided to buy like you did with figma.
