I’m a parent. I’m concerned.
I want to register my child IMEI so that cellular network operators throughout the world would do what is necessary.
1-As a parent you go to (gov/isp) portal
2-you register, after due diligence your kid’s phone’ fingerprint (IMEI might not be bulletproof eg dual sims, esims, spoofing, etc among many others)
3-All cell towers giving network to that particular phone number block inappropriate content!
Simple as yet…
What is needed/necessary?
Stamp down on political violence, child porn, pornography et al at large.
Blocklists, DNS filtering, stuffs we do at home as hobbyists with pihole etc but on a much larger (and needed) scale
Why?
Many kids dying is one. But there’s hundreds more. Parents are not all tech savvy. Many hence don’t do nowt.
I won’t list it here but even in the EU it’s becoming a (serious) issue.
So what now?
1-We ask for answers not apologies
2-in an age of AI we prepare for the future
3-We are technologists. We fix broken things.
Why didn’t you go political first?
1-See above. We’re technically competent they’re politically… insufficient.
2-Latency. It’s a simple fix. It’s technological first. Just block dodgy websites as a policy.
Easy. Don’t always ask parents to do your job
So if it’s that easy why was it never fixed?
Good question. A good ol’merry side of capitalism + everyone of us is on thousands of databases already + who gives a fuck + your kids are game too…
But seriously it’s the way this system is (was) designed and how they went about it in late stage capitalism (which is now, meaning we’re all products, we’re all being fed to this one giant blob of consumption) and surrendered ourselves to it.
So why are you doing it?
I’m a dad. Of a single daughter. She’s nearly 8 years old. Even if I lock down everything as a tach savvy father nothing will protect her from watching porn at an age where it is not appropriate through another kid’s device.
Should we do do anything else?
Hell yeah. This is the bare minimum fix.
Digital literacy should be a mandatory class worldwide from an early age.
Social networks preying on our youngs should be banned end of.
Governments and supra-governments like the EU or the US should legislate it forward in the first place. And be a force of good. They fall unfortunately far behind.
You mean like RGPD?
Hell yeah!!! But when was the last time there was an EU or international treaty introduced to make sure kids wouldn’t suffer from exposure to harmful content?????
Have you contacted Herve Breton about this?
Not yet but he will soon hear from me. Last I heard he was busy with his dismantled conglomerate. Or soon to be.
Ahah fair enough so What can we do right now to help you so?
1-Make it a GitHub repo
2-push it to all the cellular/wifinetwork suppliers in the world
3-Push it to IEEE as a new ISO standard (ISO27420 Child safety standards)
4-Petition all governments to act (eventually).
One final word?
Yes. I hope I’m not asking for too much.
I just want my daughter to grow up in a dignified world. For all we see about preys and victims in the press there is nothing happening politically and technologically.
It’s a simple fix. Let’s make the world a better place and ask our network providers do the job they’re supposed to do.
