Sam Altman: I don't care if we burn $50B a year, AGI is worth it

&gt;I don&#x27;t care if we burn $50B a year...<p>Neither have any other tech loss leader businesses designed to create barriers to entry though sheer size of war chests. Amazon lost money on retail for decades, Google lost money on tons of side projects as a means of hiring talent away from would be start ups.<p>Wall Street doesn&#x27;t care about fundamental value, it cares about capital gains realized through &#x27;too-big-to-fail&#x27; structures which require high barriers to entry and require gross revenue to justify overinflated valuations (which have zero restrictions).

I really want to know <i>how</i> AGI is worth it, in Mr. Altman&#x27;s estimation. Well, beyond the fact that he&#x27;d own a stake in the company that sells it.<p>The best application of LLMs and other current state-of-the-art technologies seem to be in domain-specific uses. It does displace some jobs but doesn&#x27;t present an existential threat to society. If you make an AGI, it&#x27;s going to break a lot of what people consider their reality, and that generally doesn&#x27;t turn out well.
