Managing High Performers

> Some high performers go unmanaged for so long that they work themselves into a role that has no real responsibility - they just float around and help people. There’s nothing sadder than a capable person with no real responsibility.
What? Why is allowing a high performer to float around and help lower-performing employees a problem? If they're enjoying what they're doing (they usually are) and they're helping other people on the team (which is explicitly said) and the rest of the team recognizes them for their work (presumably they do), I'm failing to see why that's not "responsibility".
I'd honestly hate to be managed by this person. If you're my manager, I want you to let me do what I do best and offer support when I need it. Give me feedback when I'm doing something wrong, help me to the next step in my career, but if you think that it's bad that I find ways to build up the team/product without you handing my work to me that is your problem, not mine.
