Ask HN: What should I do with my VR educational programming app?

2 点作者 ih大约 1 年前
Hi HN,
I've developed a VR app (https://www.meta.com/experiences/7189958484358658/) that’s inspired by Turtle Graphics/Logo. It allows users to visualize code execution in 3D and step forward and backward in execution. I mainly made it because I thought it was an interesting idea and I wanted to try my hand at selling my own software. I initially launched it on Sidequest and the App Lab (a 3rd party marketplace and Meta's store for experimental apps) for $4.99, but haven’t really gotten sales (except 2 from people I probably know). I made a Reddit and HN post, but other than that haven't really tried any marketing. I've lowered the price to $.99 and offered a free trial, but still no luck. I suspect a big part of the problem is my imagined target audience would be kids (like for the original Logo/Turtle Graphics), but I'm not really sure how I would connect with that audience (edit: and the Meta Quest isn't really for anyone under 13 as someone pointed out). My interest/motivation in the project has waned and I’ve already kind of moved on, but am hesitant to completely abandon the project.
I'm now considering a few different paths forward and would love to hear your thoughts:
1. Keep it paid and put more effort into marketing
2. Make it free and explore monetization later (and put more effort into marketing)
3. Make it free and open source and don't plan to monetize
4. Do nothing: Avoid putting any more time and effort into the project and focus on new interests
5. Keep it paid and try to make it more polished and professional looking (not really leaning towards this option, but throwing it out there in case people think that's what's holding it back)
I know they aren't entirely all mutually exclusive, but figured it'd help to show roughly how I'm thinking about it. Thanks in advance for your insights!
