OpenAI's charter is to produce AGI that is a benefit for everyone. A copy of their charter is here: https://openai.com/charter/
Supposing they succeed, AGI will be able to autonomously produce and market its own products without human intervention.
Currently it looks like this will be used by profit seeking companies to maximize their profits while laying off workers who can be replaced by OpenAI credits.
Rather than have all the resources owned by private companies that don't even employ anyone, once AGI that can do anything is developed, should OpenAI use it to enter every market, and then distribute cash from sales of every product and service type to everyone to use to buy whatever they want, without having to do anything for it?
Under this scenario in a future where AI does all the work, humans could all benefit.
OpenAI can barely enter 1 market without tearing themselves apart in the process. If they started replacing literally everything I own, I would probably consider subsistence farming and letting Sam do whatever he wants with the corpse of our society. There's no value being part of an anarchist state run by an "effective altruist" benefactor, it's tantamount to eating from the hand of fascism.
Thankfully I don't have to worry about that though, since OpenAI's dysfunction is pretty much the only innovation they deliver on these days. The concept of "AGI" will be what we laugh at on Saturday Night Live in 2028.
