If we're not comparing excess deaths over time, it's not a useful comparison, but also there's no reason besides rhetorical shock value to try to compare deaths caused by terrible computer system failures and ransomware specifically to a global pandemic just because both have high death tolls<p>Microsoft's PR strategy is already to paint people who avoid their products as contrarian cranks. I'm absolutely with the authors here that we're dealing with one of the greatest evil empires the world has ever known, and get that it's hard to even scratch the surface of harms they've demonstrably done without sounding angry or paranoid to people who don't know or care to know that, but anyone who does numerical analysis is going to wrinkle their nose at an ill-formed comparison like that, and they keep saying it over and over.
