Ask HN: Define Marketing

3 点作者 imvetri9 个月前
I'm asking to clear my mind because when I think of marketing, mind gets into UI aspect including content, features of the product.
I'm trying to learn marketing from scratch. I'm an engineer, spotted a problem, solved the problem with a product, wrote FAQs for product, I know the target audience and the market.
I'm asking because, in my world marketing is different and in reality it is different.
I know it is about having a product site, sharing it in forums like producthunt, hackernews, reddit.
That seems odd, because it shouldn't be the only places also there are already in these communities and I want to explore uncertain places.
I'm aware of seo as well, but im unable to believe in it. I have strong belief in product I have but I do not believe in these forums or communities.
What is marketing ? In my words finding the customers for the product.
How do I find my customers? Is answer I'm trying to find. I mean, I'd show the tool to designers in my office, but I can't sell to them. I need customers who I do not know but need this software.
My words might not reflect what I'm trying to ask, I'll be glad to explain or elaborate it.
Like keep track of discussions in target audience forum and slide in a link or tutorial on how to solve the problem using my tool? But where do such discussions happen for ui designers?
What if I didn't know about ycombinator and reddit. What I would have done. Just continue building the product. But I'd like to balance building and selling.

You claim to have solved a problem. You also claim you know the target audience. Assuming that within that target audience your solution to their problem is worth the price you are asking.
Then the issue of marketing is reaching your clearly specified target audience and communicating the availability of your solution to THEIR problem. You need to convey your belief in your product to them. i.e. evangelize. Of course, you need to go to where your targeted customers are. No use talking to folks in your office if they are not the buyers. Promoting on HN, etc is only applicable if your product is for technical folks. SEO might work if your re-frame your keywords to be the words that your potential customers would use to express their search for a solution.
A useful way to get ideas of how to market your product is to identify several products that solve adjacent problems. Then look at how those products are being marketed. It is also instructive to look at how sales grew for those products. For example, don't look at Apple iPhone market as it is now. Look at how Apple started back in the 1980s.

Simplest thing I could come up with: Marketing is the message that describes your product (copywriting, branding, positioning) + the distribution channels to spread it to the right people (SEO, social media, ads, etc.)
