The Republic of Palau Becomes ITU's 194th Member State

I don&#x27;t know the full scope of what ITU does, but I do know they are responsible for the X.509 specification[0]. It&#x27;s a cornerstone upon which Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is built. Fun Fact: the malay word for “island” is “pulau.”<p>As in Pulau Penang.<p>I always wondered if there was some Indonesian influence in places like Palau, Micronesia, etc.

Palau was the last colonized territory to achieve independence with help of the United Nations’ Trusteeship Council, in 1994. Since then, the Council still exists on paper, but is inactive in practice.<p>It took three decades for Palau to join the ITU. Maybe that was not a priority for the country until now.
