One of my children is affected by a similar change. The number of foreign students grew to such a number that the admission threshold for locals exceeded the best possible grade (ie. my child would need perfect grades plus bonus points).
What puzzles me is that very few people understand the motivation for the change. The minister stated before the reform that the goal would be ease the painfully high admission threshold, and even so, when the reformed rules were published most people assumed that the real goal was to keep foreigners out.

This article is a mess. The post title is a mess and the headline is a mess.
The article calls UNSW a "top 3 university", whatever that means. Not the top university that the HN title implies.
Additionally there is no halt to international admissions, just a reduction to 9500 students (from 17k) starting in 2025. The reduction is based on a new law.
What's most interesting to me is that the article states that there are almost 1 million international students, in a country with a population of 27.5M (according to Wikipedia). Which means ~3% of the entire country is international students. This data however is suspect and contradicts the official data here, which shows roughly 500k - https://www.education.gov.au/higher-education-statistics/stu...

Clickbaity title. They are not halting international student admissions.
They are reducing the existing quotas and there is no available spots remaining for 2025 as all have apparently already been filled.
