We have seen a lot of buzz around LLMs such as ChatGPT. I live in Uganda where the economy is still vastly agricultural as it employs about 70% of the population. I have had a lot of questions from friends asking me the best application of AI/LLMs in their farms and I have not come up with any good answer yet. I have tried to take pictures of certain crops in my garden and asking ChatGPT for solutions on certain conditions such as curly, yellow leaves for instance. Most of the answers, however, are pretty generic. I am not an Agric. expert, so I wouldn't even really know how accurate these results were. So I am looking for any pointers in how to apply AI in more practical and helpful way in agriculture sector. Thanks.
I would look into more traditional data science for crop monitoring and management. I personally don't see Generative AI (LLMs) as something that can help nearly as much. The conditions and remedies are well known and simpler classifiers should be up to the task. The harder problem is knowing when and where things are happening, which aligns with the tradition that 80% of the work is managing the data, 20% is using the data tools and gaining insights
