This article appears to be arguing that we should learn every aspect of every skill. It has always been useful to have a survey of the past in every field but as more advanced understandings and tools come in it isn't practical, or even possible, to learn everything from the basics up. Do you need to learn how to mine and refine metal in order to work with a CNC machine? How about every aspect of farming in order to be a great chef? A survey of techniques helps and some individuals will deep-dive into various things, but to it is clear that moving forward means focusing on current techniques more than old ones.
