I think it's been known for a while that people are getting taller. One explanation has been that people are getting a better diet.<p>My perception when I was working at a supermarket as a teen was that there were more people taller than me (6 ft) my own age than among people who were older (say 30+)<p>I'd imagine that genes that make both men and women taller would be sexually selected for by that mechanism, but that those genes may be sex-linked, expressed differently in men than women. Men might be taller than women in general because of that sex linkage.
I'm 5'8", born in the 50's, and generally considered to be of average height for most of my life, but now my younger female employees definitely think I'm shorter than average, even though they're shorter than me.
